LOS ANGELES – September 21, 2026. Dark-pop artist Kiki T turns one of dating’s oldest insults into a monster story on “MAD,” the first single from her Halloween EP FINAL GIRL, released September 18. Inspired by Frankenstein, the song takes apart the familiar story of a man who relentlessly pursues a woman and then decides she is “crazy” once she becomes attached. Kiki T gives that dynamic a literal horror-movie twist, casting the woman as the creature and the man who made her as the one who cannot handle what he built.
“I kept thinking about Frankenstein,” Kiki T says. “The monster was perfectly content not existing. He didn’t ask to be brought to life, and then the person who created him was horrified when he became a real, complicated living thing. There’s something about that story that feels a lot like modern dating.”
That metaphor runs straight through “MAD.” The song opens with “You brought me back from the dead / You laid me down on your bed,” placing its woman somewhere between lover and experiment as the man who pursued her proudly admires what he has created. She was content in the dark before he arrived. He woke up everything she had been doing perfectly well without and then discovered that a living woman comes with thoughts and needs of her own. The word “mad” carries both meanings through the song, his anger at her and his inability to stop wanting her.
“Sometimes someone pursues you relentlessly,” Kiki T says. “They want the thrill of knowing they can get you to want them. They wake up all of these feelings, make you feel safe enough to become attached, and then suddenly you’re ‘crazy,’ ‘too attached,’ ‘too emotional’ or just too much. Meanwhile, you were perfectly happy minding your own business before they showed up.”
The second half of the song pushes beyond one bad relationship and into the stories women absorb long before they start dating. In the bridge, Kiki T repeats, “If it hurts you know it’s love,” a familiar romantic cliché the song states plainly and leaves unsoftened. That idea connects “MAD” to the larger concept behind FINAL GIRL, a Halloween project built around stories and expectations Kiki T felt women had been handed without ever being offered a better version.
“A lot of the EP takes familiar stories, archetypes and things women have been taught to accept and flips them on their heads,” she explains. “I kept finding themes that I felt we deserved a better version of.”
That makes “MAD” a natural opening chapter for the project. Its Frankenstein imagery gives Kiki T a way to play with the “crazy woman” stereotype without treating her central character as somebody who mysteriously lost her mind.
“Maybe she didn’t start out crazy. Maybe you dug her up, brought her back to life and then got mad when she actually lived.”
“MAD” begins a staggered rollout leading directly into Halloween. The title track “Final Girl” follows on October 1 and “Terrified” arrives October 15 before the complete FINAL GIRL EP lands October 29. The project continues the darker storytelling Kiki T has been developing while giving her room to turn horror imagery into something considerably more recognizable: women taking back stories that have traditionally made them the problem.
“He wanted the thrill of creating the monster without considering what would happen once she became a real person,” Kiki T says. “This is what dark pop was literally made for.”
“The day we stop calling women crazy is the day I’ll stop writing songs about calling women crazy.”
Kiki T is a dark-pop artist based in Los Angeles. She grew up on Oahu and left a doctoral program in cognitive neuroscience to write music, and she still does her best writing in a parked car in a dark garage with the door shut, which she has described as feeling like being underwater where nobody can reach her. Her catalog includes the EPs Aqua Eterna and Aqua Obscura, a body of work run through with water imagery that FINAL GIRL trades for a season of horror.
“MAD” is available now on all streaming platforms. The FINAL GIRL EP arrives October 29.Listen Now: Spotify | Apple Music | Tidal | Amazon Music
